Prison Windows

Updated: Aug 13, 2018

This is a photo of me in a Kurdish ghetto in San Lurfa, Turkey, often called Urfa.

The women looking at me from the window are likely Kurdish. You rarely see women in public although men are everywhere. It really it a man's world in much of the Middle East.

It is dangerous to show your elbows and hair in small towns like Urfa. I imagine these women/girls looking at my hair shining in the sun and my elbows bared.

Their limited options remind me of my own experience growing up in the Move of God. What I wore, where I went, what I read, and even what I thought was chosen by people I barely knew. No television, movies, art galleries, secular books, plays, and very little art. No dancing, it would lead to sex. Even most Christian music was evil.

Although the freedom to figure out who I was came at the old age of 19, I'm thrilled that I've been able to lead a life full of art, music, outdoor activities, education, achievement, and great sex.
